Areas of Practice

Sanjay specialises in public and human rights law with an emphasis on immigration, medical regulation and professional discipline and sports law. This includes work for the General Medical Council, the General Dental Council and the ACCA dealing with all aspects of professional regulation.

In the immigration and human rights law field Sanjay represents appellants in refugee and international protection appeals and has a particular interest in the interface between mental health and refugee protection, and social entitlement generally, including housing. Sanjay also sits as a First Tier Tribunal Judge in these areas (see below). He has a particular interest in medico-legal matters. He is regularly instructed in business and professional immigration appeals, and also advises on nationality law issues generally in particular for professional and business people.

Sanjay has acted in a number of high profile matters which include representing sports people in the immigration and regulatory process. For example, he represented Al Bangura, for Watford F.C., in his matters before the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal as well as before the Football Association.

Sanjay was a Visiting Lecturer in Law at King's College London (2005-2009) and University College London (1992-3). He was also an occasional tutor in advocacy at the Inns of Court School of Law (1995-7).

Reported Cases

R (AHK and others) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2009] EWCA Civ 287; [2009] 1 WLR 2049 (whether to appoint a special advocate on judicial review of a refusal of British citizenship where Home Secretary disputed good character and was not willing to disclose relevant material on public interest grounds).

I and others v Director of Public Prosecutions [2001] UKHL 10; [2002] 1 AC 285 (the leading case on the criminal law of affray).

R v Secretary of State for the Home Department, ex parte Roomy [1991] Imm AR 483 (male rape as persecution).
