Charles joined 4KBW, in 2018 after spending several years in a mixed common law set.

His practice covers a range of Chambers’ core areas of law, particularly:

Chancery and Finance

Charles is regularly instructed on contractual disputes in respect of recovery of loans, overdrafts, guarantees, assigned debts, direct debit mandates, and consumer credit related matters.

Charles has extensive experience acting for mortgage companies in contentious and complex possession proceedings, which have included:

  • Trusts & Beneficial Interest
  • Fraud
  • Undue Influence
  • Overriding Interests
  • Harassment
  • Unfair treatment of borrowers
  • Unconventional defences, such as “freemen of the land”

Charles is regularly instructed in respect of matters under the Companies Act 2006, as well as disputes involving Partnerships and Joint Ventures.

Charles also has experience of applications for vesting orders pursuant to the Trustee Act 1925.



Charles has extensive experience in both corporate and personal insolvency proceedings. Regularly instructed in respect of:

  • Winding up/bankruptcy petitions,
  • Applications to rescind winding up orders,
  • applications to annul,
  • the appointment of liquidators,
  • Validations orders (both individual and company),
  • Applications to restrain advertisement
  • Applications to set aside statutory demands, and
  • Applications by trustees for orders for sale.

Landlord and Tenant

Charles acts on behalf or Landlords, Management Companies, and Tenants in respect of Commercial and Residential Landlord and Tenant matters.

Trusts of Land

Regularly instructed on matters that involve, co-ownership, partnerships, and resulting and constructive trusts.  Frequently instructed in applications for orders for sale pursuant to s.14 Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996

Charles also has experience of applications for vesting orders pursuant to the Trustee Act 1925.


Charles is regularly instructed on behalf of Landlords, Leaseholders, and RTM Companies in matters before the Tribunal. This has includes appearing and advising in respect of:

  • Service Charge and Administration Charge disputes
  • Various applications pursuant to CLRA 2002 including
  • Applications to appoint a manager pursuant to section.24 Landlord and Tenant 1987
  • The acquiring of management functions by Right to Manage companies

Charles has also represented clients in challenges to the register in the Land Registration Tribunal.

Charles successfully represented clients in respect of contested charging orders, and subsequently secured orders for sale pursuant to the same as well as representing Landlords in anti-social behaviour and harassment injunctions under the Housing Act 1996
